Paul grew up surrounded by melody in a prominent gypsy musical family in Hungary. Both his mother and father were singers that performed professionally and at family gatherings. Cousins, aunts, uncles…everyone played music. The sound Paul learned from them was classically based in the form of the “European Blues.” Traditional gypsy folk music is filled with tales of sorrow and persecution from years of social repression.
Growing up under the shadows of racial tension in his native land was rough for Paul. The story how he learned to play is remarkable journey of human resilience. As a young teen, he ran into legal challenges and was jailed for one year. In order to stay out of trouble and pass the time, he taught himself guitar while incarcerated.
The energy that had driven Paul to survive was funneled into the guitar with incredible results and ingenuity. The word spread of his talents and the legendary George Benson sponsored him and brought him over to the United States.
Currently, Paul resides in Hungary, where he continues to write and perform.
“Paul is a complete monster on the guitar. He is probably one of the best guitar players that I’ve ever heard. As an artist, he can play anything from gypsy jazz to Giant Steps,” said Dave Sereny, guitarist and Groove United co-founder.
